Tuna melts are a classic lunchtime treat. They consist of delicious tuna on fluffy bread with creamy, stretchy cheese. While the dish is already pretty satisfying, adding the right sides can make it extra special. Below is a look at what to serve with tuna melts.
If you like a classic tuna salad, you’re sure to enjoy a cheesy tuna melt.
Air fryer tuna melts are one of my favourite Lunch options. I add pickles for some extra crunch and a burst of refreshing flavour.
But you don’t have to. Tuna mayo is excellent with corn, peppers, red onion, spring onion and many more.
A cheesy tuna melt is super versatile and incredibly satisfying.
A tuna melt on thick, white bread with cheese inside and on the top is already fairly filling. But adding sides helps create a more nutritious meal with plenty of texture and flavour.
It’s an incredibly popular dish that works well with many different additions.

Classic Pairings for Tuna Melts
When it comes to what to serve with tuna melts, the classic pairings are often the best.
Classic sides for tuna melts are pretty much the same as for any sandwich, but some suit tuna exceptionally well.
Coleslaw
I always think coleslaw is great with a sandwich. The creamy taste and juicy mayo are refreshing next to thick bread.
Crunchy veggies also work well with soft tuna mayo. It’s an excellent combination, and if you are looking for something easy to serve with a classic tuna melt, coleslaw could be perfect.

Pickles
I put pickles in my tuna melt. This might be weird, but honestly, a few diced pickles mixed in the tuna mayo is fantastic.
But it does mean that when I’m thinking about what to serve with tuna melts, I wouldn’t turn to pickles. There is such a thing as too many.
If, however, you don’t add them to the tuna, a few pickled gherkins (dill pickle) on the side could add a refreshing flavour and juicy texture.

Chips
Chips, whether thick or French fries are a great way to add a filling element to your meal. If you want a heavier lunch or you’re having tuna melts for dinner, adding chips is a great idea.
Wedges
Wedges are a fantastic alternative to chips. To be honest, I think I prefer them. Chunky skin on wedges served simply with salt and pepper have a lovely taste and texture and make your tuna sandwich lunch much more filling.

Crisps
Crisps or potato chips are a classic addition to any sandwich at lunchtime. I like a classic ready-salted served with my tuna melts.

Creative Side Dish Ideas
In addition to the classic options, some more creative sides are still accessible and are great with tuna melts!
Sweet Potato Fries
Sweet potato fries are a healthy alternative to wedges or chips. They add a lovely, sweet flavour that contrasts nicely with tuna melts.
Roasted Kale Chips
I mean, you can. I would not!
Tomato Soup
Tomato basil soup, or just a creamy tomato soup, is brilliant with any sandwich or toastie, and tuna melts are no different.
When I’m wondering what to serve with tuna melts, soups are a go-to when it’s cold outside.

Garlic Bread
Garlic bread might not seem massively creative, but bread with a sandwich is a bit out of the ordinary. However, people have garlic bread with burgers and wraps, so why not?
Potato Salad
Potato salad with Black pepper or chives is a fantastic side with everything. Tuna melts included.
Healthier Alternatives
While potato salads, chips, and garlic bread are filling and tasty, they aren’t healthy.
If you prefer a lighter, healthier lunch, here are some healthy options to serve with tuna melts.
Green Salad
A crunchy green salad is perfect with a rich, creamy tuna melt. The flavours and textures work well and add nutrition without calories or saturated fat.
Add some tomato slices or chunks of bell pepper for colour.

Fruit Salad
I wouldn’t eat a fruit salad with my tuna melts. But a bowl of fruit on the side afterwards is a great way to add a refreshing pudding and a little healthy sweetness to the dish.
Yoghurt
Yoghurt is a creamy, filling, refreshing, and healthy addition to any lunch. Whether flavoured, natural, or Greek, it is an excellent addition. Add some fruit for a healthy flavour.
Vegetables
Steamed or air-fried vegetables are healthy, fresh, and juicy. They add colour, texture, flavour, and nutrition to your tuna melts and can give you a great energy boost to help you avoid any afternoon slump.

Drinks Pairings
The drinks you serve with any meal can add an extra layer, offering refreshment and increasing the satisfaction of the meal.
Fruit Juice
A light fruit juice, or something like orange juice and lemonade, is refreshing and flavourful. It’s ideal with a tuna melt, which can be pretty heavy.
Iced Tea or Coffee
Iced tea or coffee is zesty and refreshing. Perfect with tuna melts on a warm day.
Hot Tea or Coffee
If you want something more comforting, a sweet tea or a rich, freshly brewed coffee can warm you up and give you an energy boost as you enjoy your lunch.
Flavoured Water
For a lighter, healthier, refreshing option, opt for water flavoured with fresh fruit or a slice of cucumber.
Crisp White Wine
How about a crisp, cold glass of white wine for a fantastically decadent lunchtime treat? White wine works well with tuna and always feels slightly naughty during the day.
